Trends for Boards to Focus on in 2024

The new year has now arrived and most Boards will be preparing for their first Board Meeting of the new calendar year. For some it might be the first trading month of the new financial year too. The past few years have been anything but predictable. So only a fool would make concrete predictions for what the next 12 months will hold! But here’s my list of 10 trends I think Boards should be focused on.

My Top 10 for 2024

  1. Digital Transformation In 2024, Boards will continue to be expected to navigate and embrace advancements in technology such as AI and blockchain. Understanding and integrating these technologies is crucial for staying competitive and future-proof.

  2. Sustainable Growth Environmental sustainability must be a key focus. Boards are now prioritising strategies that ensure growth while being environmentally conscious, reflecting a commitment to a sustainable future.

  3. Diversity and Inclusion Diversity in boardrooms is increasingly recognised for its value in bringing varied perspectives and ideas. There is a growing emphasis on creating Boards that mirror the diversity of our society.

  4. Agile Leadership The ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and consumer needs is essential. Agile leadership, characterised by flexibility and resilience, is vital in today's fast-paced business environment.

  5. Cybersecurity Vigilance As reliance on technology grows, so does the importance of cybersecurity. Protecting digital assets and data against threats is a top priority for leaders.

  6. Employee Wellbeing and Culture There is a growing recognition of the importance of employee wellbeing and a positive workplace culture. Boards are focusing on creating environments that foster employee happiness and productivity.

  7. Innovative Thinking Innovation and challenging traditional ways of thinking will be essential in 2024. Boards must foster creativity and explore new approaches to problem solving.

  8. Globalisation and Cross-Border Collaboration Embracing globalisation and engaging in cross-border collaborations offers the greatest growth opportunities. Boards are increasingly looking to expand their global footprint while maintaining local relevance.

  9. Ethical Leadership and Governance Ethical leadership and robust governance remain critical. Boards are expected to uphold high ethical standards and lead with integrity. Streamlining board operations will continue to be in-focus for Chairs.

  10. Navigating Regulatory Changes Keeping abreast of regulatory changes and ensuring compliance is more important than ever. Boards must stay informed and adaptable to navigate these evolving legal landscapes. The constantly-changing AI landscape - including its question on copyright, privacy, and data - should be a primary topic for Boards.
